What will I learn?

Foundations

B.A. students in creative writing at Valpo must complete the general-education requirements for the B.A in addition to the requirements for the major. This University-wide core strengthens communication and critical-thinking skills while introducing the student to global cultures and traditions. Majors in creative writing must also complete either a minor in their chosen field of study, or the 40-credit (rather than the 33-credit) major in English. Please see the material on the English major in the General Catalog for specific degree requirements.

Requirements, the Creative Writing Major

A major in Creative Writing requires a minimum of 33 credit hours in writing or language-related courses. Courses must include the following:

  • ENGL 180: Gateways to Interpretation
  • ENGL 201: Introduction to Creative Writing
  • ENGL 311: New Literacies, Technologies, and Cultures of Writing
  • ENGL 492: Seminar in English

plus three courses selected from the following:

  • ENGL 323: Short Story Writing
  • ENGL 324: Poetry Writing
  • ENGL 325: Creative Nonfiction
  • ENGL 431: Advanced Composition
  • THTR 252: Writing for the Stage and Screen

plus one course selected from the following:

  • ENGL 370: Modern and Contemporary Fiction
  • ENGL 372: Modern and Contemporary Drama
  • ENGL 375: Modern and Contemporary Poetry

plus nine credits selected from the following:

any English courses numbered 200 or above

  • COMM 230: Graphic Design I
  • COMM 330: Graphic Design II

Entry requirements

For international students

Applicants are required to have High School graduation.

English language requirements: TOEFL (75 iBT minimum); IELTS (6.0 minimum); iTEP (3.8 or higher); PTE (56 or higher); SAT (Reading & Writing score of 500); ACT (English score of 24); GCE or GCSE English exam (Grade of A or B); IB Higher Level English Exam (Score of 5, 6, or 7 or grade A or B); Completion of at least 2 consecutive years of high school and graduate from a US based high school; Completion of Level 112 at an ELS Language Center.
