What will I learn?

The Bowling Green State University Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) graphic design major educates those who help us make sense of the information that surrounds us daily – they are equal parts visualizer, collaborator and leader.

We emphasize design for social impact and entrepreneurial spirit. The flexible program will give you skills and experiences that are desired by advertising and in-house agencies, design firms and emerging technologies industries.

Learning Outcomes for the Graphic Design BFA Degree:

Identify and analyze social challenges through the study and application of design thinking, innovative problem solving and integrative design practices;

Demonstrate knowledge of visual literacy;

Demonstrate conceptual skills to inquire, interpret and illustrate an idea for an unknown audience via empathetic and iterative processes through visual thinking of sketching, prototyping, and implementation;

Exhibit skills in team building, collaboration, storytelling and intervention design as well as developing community partnerships along with a professional work ethic;

Demonstrate knowledge of graphic design related tools for application of practices and processes of the industry;

Apply both verbal and visual presentation skills; and

Research, debate and critique complex social problems.

The critical and design-thinking skills the BFA in graphic design will also empower you to succeed in a world where every organization wants to be design-led.

Skills gained in the BGSU graphic design major are in demand by organizations in every part of society. People will need always resourceful visual communicators, and our students develop successful careers as graphic designers, art directors and communications specialists in a wide variety of related fields.

Entry requirements

For international students

Students should have official transcripts from secondary school and from any post-secondary school attended.

English Language Proficiency requirements, provide one (or more) of the following recommended minimums from the list below:

TOEFL IBT: 71

MELAB: 69

IELTS: 6.0

Pearson Test of English (PTE): 48

Duolingo English Test Score: 100 (temporarily accepted through Spring 2024 admission)

Completion of ELS Intensive English for Academic Purposes Level 112
