What will I learn?

The professional Master of Materials Science and Nanoengineering (MMSNE) at Rice University is a non-thesis program designed for students who have shown academic excellence, as well as engineering professionals who wish to delve more deeply into engineering subject matter, increase opportunities for industry advancement and enhance their technical skills.

Students not only focus on increasing their engineering abilities but also round out their education with training in entrepreneurship, project management, networking and leadership, preparing them for industry and business with an advanced understanding of both the theories and applications of materials science and nanotechnology.

Upon completing the MMSNE degree, students will be able to:

  1. Acquire broad, advanced knowledge within either Materials Science or NanoEngineering, which is also in-depth in one major sub-discipline of the field.
  2. Conduct research at an advanced level in at least one area of Materials Science and Nanoengineering.
  3. Communicate scientific ideas effectively in writing and when speaking.

Students pursuing the MMSNE degree must complete:

  • A minimum of 13 courses (33 credit hours) to satisfy degree requirements.
  • A minimum of 33 credit hours of graduate-level study (graduate semester credit hours, coursework at the 500-level or above).
  • A minimum of 27 graduate semester credit hours must be taken at Rice University.
  • A minimum of 27 graduate semester credit hours must be taken in standard or traditional courses (with a course type of lecture, seminar, laboratory, lecture/laboratory).
  • A minimum residency enrollment of one fall or spring semester of part-time graduate study at Rice University.
  • A maximum of 2 courses (6 graduate semester credit hours) from transfer credit. For additional departmental guidelines regarding transfer credit, see the Policies tab.
  • The requirements for one area of specialization. The MMSNE degree program offers two areas of specialization:
    • Materials Science, or
    • NanoEngineering.
  • A minimum overall GPA of 2.67 or higher in all Rice coursework.
  • A minimum program GPA of 3.00 or higher in all Rice coursework that satisfies requirements for the non-thesis master鈥檚 degree with a minimum grade of B- (2.67 grade points) in each course.

Entry requirements

For international students

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent undergraduate degree
  • Grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or the equivalent in another grading system ( If your university/college does not use the 4.0 grading system, please translate your GPA into the 4.0 scale if at all possible)

Applicants who are foreign nationals or whose native language is not English must provide objective proof that they meet one of the following thresholds as proof of English proficiency:

  • At least a 90 on the iBT TOEFL.
  • At least 600 on the paper-based TOEFL.
  • At least 7 on the IELTS.
  • At least 115 on the Duolingo test of English proficiency.
  • The applicant has completed, or is expected to complete, a post-secondary degree from an institution in which English is the official language of communication or instruction. A list of previously approved institutions can be found on the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies website.
