What will I learn?

Within the area of music education, students may select an instrumental emphasis or Vocal Emphasis. This degree is designed to prepare individuals for professional advancement or for entry into further study at the doctoral level.

Awards for full-time graduate assistantships are available on a competitive basis. Recipients of these positions will take active leadership roles in the department's ensembles, teaching and accompanying private lessons and/or serving as an assistant to the ensemble director.

This degree provides a comprehensive overview of current teaching methods and theory in music education. Your program of study will be individualized through the use of electives, enabling you to explore topics that are relevant to your area of expertise. You can even continue to work while you study by completing several courses online, including Music History, Educational Foundations, Psychology of Music, or flexible Directed Study.

Entry requirements

Admission requires a bachelor's degree with a grade-point average of at least a 2.7 on a 4.0 scale.

The minimum score levels required for various degree programs at Pittsburg State University range from:
