What will I learn?

The MSN-PMHNP program is designed for registered nurses who want to expand their career opportunities and professional contributions. During the program, students will develop the competencies required to provide primary mental healthcare to individuals, families, and populations across the lifespan. This program can be completed in as few as 15 months.

PMHNPs are needed in medical facilities to change mental healthcare practice, reduce mental health stigma, and increase access to care.

Course Work

Course work takes place online, with some face-to-face on-campus intensives at the St. David鈥檚 School of Nursing on the Texas State University Round Rock Campus. During these on-campus intensives, students hone their skills with faculty and get to know their fellow PMHNP students. The degree requires practicum courses during which students learn one-on-one from a teacher in their area. Overall, the MSN-PMHNP master鈥檚 degree will position the post-professional Registered Nurse (RN) graduate to exhibit transformational leadership to affect and generate health policy development, organizational and systems development, evidence-based care, and evaluation of healthcare delivery in collaboration with inter-professional teams and partners.

Career Options

This degree will position the advanced practice registered nurse to deliver specialized assessment and treatment, evidence-based care, and evaluation of mental healthcare in collaboration with inter-professional teams and partners. Graduates will be eligible to sit for the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certification Exam. Potential positions include: acute and non-acute primary care facilities and state and regional mental health specialty agencies.
