The Master of Science (MS) in Nutrition is designed to prepare students for careers in the field of Nutrition and Dietetics, including opportunities in research, clinical nutrition, community nutrition and public health. Students will have the opportunity to work with a variety of faculty in the Nutrition Program, Exercise Science Program, Health Education Program and Public Health Program as well as health care professionals at UNM, the Prevention Research Center and other UNM Health Sciences sites. Course work includes gaining a deeper understanding of a variety of different areas including medical nutrition therapy, research methods, longevity, maternal and child nutrition, eating disorders, and weight management.
The MS in Nutrition offers two options or Plans: Thesis (Plan I) and Publishable Paper (Plan II). Upon admission to the MS program, you will be assigned an advisor who will assist you in selecting the most appropriate option and courses that are individualized according to your specific goals. The Thesis and Publishable Paper options consist of 36 credit hours and both options allow students to select several electives to enhance their educational and career goals. These electives may be graduate level courses taken in Nutrition, Public Health, Exercise Science, Health Education, Biostatistics, and Educational Psychology.

Students must have a bachelor鈥檚 degree in Nutrition or closely related undergraduate degree (exercise science, public health). If the degree is not in nutrition or dietetics, students may be required to complete a post baccalaureate degree in Nutrition.
