What will I learn?

Our Master of Fine Arts in Costume Production program provides developing theatre professionals with the opportunity to cultivate their artistic identities while refining and enhancing their craft.

Our program seeks to:

Enhance artistic expression, communication, and production skills through hands-on, mentored production experience within a wide range of production opportunities and classroom instruction.
Explore creative collaborations with directors, actors, designers, and playwrights.
Create new forms of theatrical expression for the next generation.

MFA Production and Production Management students are being prepared for substantive careers as theatre artists. Training includes a rigorous curriculum, production opportunities, and collaboration with professionals through our Professional Theatre Initiative. Students are mentored by working professional faculty and advisors.

Curriculum Highlights

In-depth classroom instruction in artistic, practical, and skills applications of production for the art of theatre.
Production opportunities in multiple venues and multiple genres.
Preparation and execution of a Thesis that represents the culminating of three years of study.
Opportunity to work on productions with companies through our Professional Theatre Initiative (PTI).

Learning Outcomes

The Costume Production program aims to develop a complete theatre artist by fostering a passion for theatre, storytelling, design, and the collaborative process. Through their required coursework and production assignments, Costume Production students will:

Demonstrate in-depth understanding of how costume production contributes to the creation of theater through coursework and participation in productions.
Demonstrate leadership qualities through opportunities to employ and utilize learned Design, Production, and Management knowledge.
Collaborate and participate effectively in teams, in both leading and supporting roles.
Solve problems creatively and achieve a high level of cognitive analytical thinking demonstrated through problem-solving.
Demonstrate the ability to multitask and develop excellent time management practices.
Communicate organized, complex ideas to both educators and peers.
Demonstrate the ability to impart the artistry of their discipline and therefore the direction this will take in the future.
Demonstrate proficiency in the skills necessary to be a professional in the costume production field, including, but not limited to, drawing, painting, draping, millinery, dying, proper use of fabric and the ability to clothe the human form with both two-dimensional and three-dimensional knowledge and implementation.

Entry requirements

For international students

Student must have a Bachelor degree. A BFA or BM is not a prerequisite for admission, and we invite applicants from students with a variety of academic backgrounds to apply for our graduate programs. Applicants admitted to graduate music programs with deficiencies in theory or history may be required to take review courses that will not confer graduate credit.

English Proficiency Requirement: Students who are most competitive for admission will present a composite TOEFL score of at least 90-100 and scores of 20 or higher on each subsection; The IELTS minimum score is 7.0.
