Public Policy - BA

USA

What will I learn?

Public policy is an interdisciplinary social science that builds on economics, political science, statistics, and management to address policy issues. Courses examine the rationales for government interventions in markets; the purposes and goals of public policy; the processes by which problems are defined and priorities selected; the role of governmental, non-governmental, and transnational institutions in collective action; and the circumstances under which leaders are effective in mobilizing resources to advance a group鈥檚 values and goals. They also provide the basic tools for understanding and quantitatively estimating the effects of existing and proposed public policies. Students hone their skills in internships, research, and leadership roles at UK and leave prepared to tackle society's most pressing issues with integrity.

Public policy graduates find careers in local, state, and federal government agencies, in nonprofits and advocacy organizations, and in the private sector in consulting firms, government relations, and lobbying. The skillset developed in the program gives graduates flexibility to move between sectors as their interests change and their skills are further enhanced in the field.

Careers in public policy might include:

Policy Analyst
Legislative Aide
Intelligence Analyst
Research Associate
Budget Manager
Government Relations Coordinator
Community Development Specialist

And more...
