What will I learn?

The Sustainable Design program at Thomas Jefferson University was developed by a group of the country’s top sustainable designers and experienced sustainability professors. The result is an award-winning, transdisciplinary, collaborative design program. Students build problem-solving skills to develop market-driven solutions, to become leaders in sustainable design to better serve society.

With flexible options, you can earn certificates in

  • ; or take the entire MS in Sustainable Design degree. Classes are offered on campus in East Falls, online or a hybrid of both.

    Our professors are comprised of theory-based full-time faculty and practicing professionals with diverse backgrounds in architecture, engineering, design, sustainability leadership, and construction management. Based on an integrated design education model, the program offers a unique advantage by introducing students early in the design process to experts, design options and real-world constraints.

    Projects range from high performing sustainable design projects to sustainable initiatives for non-profits and start-ups. Industry partnerships feature prominently, providing networking opportunities and hands-on practice with real-world challenges. Strong integration with the design and sustainability community in Philadelphia provides students and graduates ample opportunities for internships, volunteer positions, and job placement.

    The program also qualifies as a STEM program which allows international students to apply for a 24-month extension to their Optional Practical Training.

    Entry requirements

    For international students

    Degree Prerequisite: Applicants are required to hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent upon evaluation of international transcripts prior to the start of the program.

    GPA Requirement: A minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA is required.

    TOEFL IBT & IBT Home Edition: 80 (no sub-score below 20)

    TOEFL Essentials: 8.5 (no sub-score below 8)

    IELTS: 6.5 (no sub-score below 6)

    Duolingo Exam: 115

    Pearson PTE Academic Exam: 53
