The decision to study in Eastern Michigan University (EMU) was probably one of the better decisions I had made in life. Circa 2006, when the admits had come from all the universities, I chose Eastern only for a fact that it was in Detroit, Michigan - heart of all the automobile action. I had absolutely no prior knowledge of the life and culture there, and I wanted it to be a surprise to me(expectations lead to disappointments). I landed in Michigan on 2nd January, 2007 , already missing home and a great new year bash, feeling like a fish out of water. The volunteers from the INDSA (indian Students association) were in touch with me throughout, and were there to pick me up from the airport and helped me find accommodation. 

The university had organized a Student Orientation, something that was to help new students get a hang of what was happening at the university, and to also meet the other fishes out of water :) . The detailed orientation was really useful as it helped me out with my course registration, and also helped me find an on campus job to support myself there. Since I had been educated under the CBSE system of edcuation, and did my engineering under Anna University, everything was already set(subjects, curriculum, etc), which wasnt the case, and the orientation really helped me find me feet with all this. 

The department (Mechanical Engineering) was very helpful and welcoming towards new students, helping us with the course content and got us to meet our professors/lecturers for the first time. Over the next 1.5/2 yrs, we (students and professors) developed a good working rapport, and we were able to get upto speed with what was required of us and deliver as needed.

The University is very well equipped and very well planned out as well. The student center was the center of all action, it had everything from food courts to the Office of Intl students (OIS) and a bank. There was a REC/IM which had all the sports activities and a well equipped Gym as well. They even had a indoor running track!! :) A college shuttle would help us get from building to building when the weather (which was more often that not pretty unforgiving) let us down. In and round the campus, there were a LOT of houses and accommodation options for those who couldnt get a room on campus; and most importantly a variety of eateries and clubs which was essential sometimes after a looong hard week :) . The university also had shuttle services to nearby towns on a regular schedule, which helped us and other students to go about and get their groceries and do other shopping (even though Ypsilanti was more than self sufficient with even an Indian groceries store to go).

Overall, it almost felt like a home away from home. The kind student body, the ever helpful OIS , and the other students from diverse cultures and ethnic backgrounds made this a learning experience in more ways than one. show less
