The University of Denver (DU) was established in 1864 as the Colorado Seminary, hardly six years after the founding of Denver City, in what was then known as the Colorado Territory. The city of Denver and DU have developed in tandem ever since. As Denver was transformed from a gold rush boom town into one of the most cosmopolitan cities of the interior West, DU evolved from its roots as a Methodist seminary into a global intellectual center. DU also established one of the first business schools in the U.S., as well as the first school of social work between the Mississippi and the West Coast. Learning at DU goes beyond the lecture hall, with excellent opportunities for research, scholarship, performance, and engagement. Students at DU collaborate with peers and faculty across disciplines, developing important skills in the process.
