What will I learn?

Become a qualified primary or secondary teacher with our Master of Teaching and Learning. Learn about contemporary and emerging trends in education and be informed by current research. Confidently challenge assumptions and practices in learning and teaching and use this to amplify the voices of all of your students. This programme will develop your critical understanding of research-based pedagogical approaches, learning theory, inquiry skills and content knowledge to ensure you can effectively teach diverse learners in New Zealand schools.You will also gain valuable practical experience with the professional support of Te Kura Toi Tangata School of Education lecturers and Mentor Teachers. This programme will provide you with a total of 80 days in the classroom, in two different schools. Papers examine teaching in the New Zealand context, evidence-based inquiry, teaching diverse learners, and curriculum design and implementation. Students complete eleven 500 level postgraduate papers (180 points). The Master of Teaching and Learning is an intensive course aimed at high achievers and requires a higher entry criteria than the Graduate Diploma in Teaching. This is an approved Initial Teacher Education Programme that leads to registration and provisional certification as a teacher in New Zealand.

Entry requirements

For international students

Candidates for the Degree must have

  • satisfied the requirements of a bachelors degree with at least a B grade average across the 300 level papers, or for a qualification considered by the Academic Board to be equivalent, or
  • qualified for the award of a bachelors degree with honours with at least second class honours (second division), or for the award of a postgraduate diploma in a subject relevant to the Master of Teaching and Learning, or for a qualification considered by the Academic Board to be equivalent, and
  • satisfied the prerequisites for postgraduate study in the subject(s) being presented for the Degree, at levels considered appropriate by the Academic Board, and
  • been selected by the Division of Education as meeting the Teaching Council's selection criteria for Initial Teacher Education Programmes.

Candidates for the secondary endorsement must have sufficient depth and breadth of relevant subject or curriculum knowledge at Levels 5-7.

Candidates who do not meet the requirements of these regulations may be considered for admission subject to the completion of any qualifying papers the Academic Board may prescribe which must be completed either prior to or concurrently.

English Language Requirements

  • IELTS - 7.0 (with no less than 7.0 in any band)
  • IB full diploma in English medium (24 points minimum). This must be completed at an IB school;
  • Cambridge English exams C2 Proficiency (CPE) or C1 Advanced (CAE) or
  • Cambridge English exams B2 First (FCE). A minimum score of 185, with no band score less than 185;
  • PTE Academic - A minimum score of 65 in all four modules;
  • a TOEFL iBT (Internet Based TOEFL) Must meet the following overall score of 98 and the following scores in each module: Listening - 24; Reading - 24; Writing - 27; Speaking - 23.
